When to clean your wiper blades and when to replace them

Do you find it difficult to drive in the rain because your windscreen wipers aren’t working the way they should be? They might need a simple clean, but it could also be time to replace them. Visibility is essential for safe driving, so it’s imperative to stay on top of wiper blade maintenance. But how can you tell whether they need replacing or cleaning? Here are our top tips for telling the difference.

Cleaning your wiper blades
It is recommended that you clean your wiper blades once a month or so to keep them in top condition. You might need to clean them more often than that if you start to notice any of the following things happen when you turn your windscreen wipes on:

  • Leaving streaks on your windscreen
  • Skipping while they wipe instead of the wipes being clean and uninterrupted
  • Making squeaking noises

Those annoying (and potentially dangerous) problems are often caused by dirty wiper blades. Fortunately, cleaning them is fast and easy. Simply remove any debris from your windshield like leaves or twigs and wipe down your blades with warm soapy water. And don’t forget to clean your windscreen often with a strong glass cleaner – your wipers won’t work properly if your windscreen has dirt and grime on it

Replacing your wiper blades
As a general rule of thumb, you should replace your wiper blades every six months. Especially in rainier months, wiper blades undergo a lot of wear and tear. You should also check your wipers regularly for anything that might be wrong. Some of the things you should look out for include broken or misshapen parts on the arm of the wiper, corroded metal, and visible cracks and tears on the squeegee. It’s also a good idea to make sure that the wiper blade is secure on the arm of the wiper and that the blade is securely attached to the arm.

If you notice anything that seems off, or if cleaning the wiper blade doesn’t help, that probably means it’s time to replace your blades. You can take your car to the mechanic to change the blades, but it’s also very easy to do it yourself. Simply pull the arm up and away from your windshield so it’s standing up, then unhook the old blade and insert the new one. Voila! A quick Google search will tell you which wiper blades are right for your car and they can be purchased at any auto parts store.
