Western Australia is the perfect state to explore in a car. As the largest state in the country, it boasts stunning coastal views, gorgeous vineyards, dense forests, rugged outback and more. If you’re looking for the perfect getaway, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite scenic drives through Western Australia.
- Albany and Esperance
Western Australia is famous for its crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. The best way to experience them is by taking a road trip between Albany and Esperance; we recommend dedicating a few days to experience all that this trip has to offer. There are a huge range of activities to squeeze into this trip – here are some of our favourites:
-
-
- Whale watching at Torndirrup National Park or Point Ann
- Sunbake alongside kangaroos on one of Australia’s whitest sand beaches
- Explore the incredible biodiversity of the Fitzgerald River National Park
- Discover a beautiful group of secluded beaches down Hamersley Road in Fitzgerald National Park
- Snorkel through the turquoise water at Blue Haven Beach
- Take a four wheel drive adventure through Cape Arid National Park
- Fly over the extraordinary pink water at Lake Hillier
- Indian Ocean Drive
Less than an hour north of Perth you’ll find the start of the iconic Indian Ocean Drive. The full drive is 286 kilometres long, taking you from Yanchep to Dongara-Port Denison. Although we could spend days making our way through this breathtaking stretch of coastline, even just one day will take you to incredible places. An hour out of Yanchep, you’ll find a town named Lancelin on the Coral Coast. This town is a hotspot for windsurfing, snorkeling, diving, and sand boarding. Not too far from Lancelin is Nambung National Park, home to the famous Pinnacles Desert, Lake Thetis, and Hangover Bay. We recommend starting at the Pinnacles and ending your day watching the sun set over Hangover Bay. From Nambung National Park, it’s an easy two-hour drive back to Perth. - Vlamingh Head Lighthouse Drive
Driving up the North West Cape toward Vlamingh Head will give you some unforgettable views. At Vlamingh Head, check out the iconic lighthouse and learn about it’s 100-year history. Less than 20 kilometres from Exmouth, this area of Western Australia is rich with history and has some of the most scenic coastal views in the country, looking out over the Indian Ocean and Ningaloo Reef. Vlamingh Head is also well known for its incredible bird watching opportunities. We suggest putting aside a whole day to take in the full extent of Vlamingh Head’s beauty. Before you set off on your Western Australian road trip, ensure your car is in tip top shape.
